What topics does the Northstar resource library cover?
Our guides cover the systems and decisions behind commercial and industrial HVAC and refrigeration, including ammonia refrigeration and detection, heat recovery, heat pump chillers, ductless and VRF systems, ice rink packages, retrofits, preventative maintenance, compliance, and energy rebates. Use the topic filters to browse HVAC, refrigeration, energy efficiency, health and safety, and sustainability.
Who are these HVAC and refrigeration guides written for?
Facility managers, plant operators, commercial building owners, and HVAC/R contractors across New England. Each guide explains how a system works, where it fits best, and what to plan for, so you can make better decisions about your equipment.
What is the difference between commercial and industrial refrigeration?
Commercial refrigeration usually means packaged or self-contained systems, such as walk-in coolers and freezers. Industrial refrigeration covers larger central plants, often running ammonia, for food processing, cold storage, manufacturing, and ice rinks. Northstar designs, installs, and services both.
What regulations apply to ammonia refrigeration systems?
It depends on how much ammonia your system holds. Facilities with 10,000 pounds or more fall under OSHA's Process Safety Management standard and the EPA's Risk Management Program, and smaller systems are still covered by the EPA's General Duty Clause. Industry standards from IIAR and ASHRAE 15 also apply. Our Industrial Refrigeration Compliance guide covers the details.
Can rebates help pay for HVAC or refrigeration upgrades in Massachusetts?
Often, yes. Programs like Mass Save offer incentives for high-efficiency equipment and retrofits that can cover a meaningful share of project costs. Eligibility depends on your utility and the equipment, so check before you buy. Our Energy Rebate Programs guide explains how they work.
How often should commercial HVAC and refrigeration equipment be serviced?
Most commercial HVAC systems need service at least twice a year. High-use equipment, refrigeration that runs around the clock, and critical facilities like food processing plants often need more frequent visits. A preventative maintenance program sets the right schedule for your equipment.
Does Northstar offer 24/7 emergency service?
Yes. We provide 24/7 emergency response for commercial and industrial HVAC and refrigeration across our service area. Call 508-888-3692.
